Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (the research arm of the UK Atomic Energy Authority) , is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories. In addition, UKAEA is also growing a major fusion technology programme, focussing on major challenges facing future fusion power stations :

Robotic maintenance at the Remote Application in Challenging Environments (RACE) facility
Materials testing at the Materials Research Facility (MRF).

In addition, £85m has recently been secured for UKAEA to build two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation, further cementing UKAEA leading role in this transformative new energy technology.

Site Technical Services Group (STSG) provides electrical and mechanical engineering support and capability to CCFE. Our primary function is care, operation and enhancement of site infrastructure including steady state power distribution, active ventilation, biological shielding and other building services plant. The electrical engineering team is also tasked with supporting JET machine services equipment and engineering projects, joining cross department project teams as required. The group`s responsibilities include supporting complex and intriguing equipment and will require the successful candidate to engage on a practical level in addition to providing design, assurance and operational analysis.

We are seeking an Electrical Technician to:
-provide electrical engineering support and capability to Site Technical Services Group.
-enable successful delivery of operation, maintenance and enhancement of UKAEA non-pulsed power supplies.
-support Machine and Beamline Services equipment
-supervise STSG staff electricians and apprentices.
-take responsibility for ensuring plant faults are quickly addressed.

Key accountabilities/responsibilities include:
-Act as FRM for one L3 staff electrical technician and two L4 equivalent ASW`s.
-Take responsibility for JET Machine Services motor control switchgear and associated LV equipment. Ensure reliability in support of JET operations. Formulate, plan and execute EMIT schedule.
-Ensure all work undertaken by the Group complies with current legislation and codes of practice and delivered safely and effectively.
-Lead and manage staff electricians and apprentices in support of UKAEA operations.
-Implement support programme for staff electrical apprentices and ensure each apprentice is provided with the support required to achieve success.
-Take full ownership of assigned work packages ensuring all technical criteria is satisfied and that work can be carried out in a safe and cost-effective manner.
-Take responsibility for installation and commissioning of assigned electrical tasks.
-Support assurance by review and analysis of existing switchgear and cabling.
-Support preparation of WSSW including risk assessments, method statements, and local rules in support of STSG requirements.
-Provide technical support to other Groups as required.
-Ensure STSG records are accurate and sufficient.


Knowledge skills and experience


Essential
-HNC/HND or equivalent.
-Must demonstrate significant experience with motor control equipment.
-Must demonstrate a high level of understanding of electrical safety and work control system components.


Desirable
Must demonstrate knowledge of large distribution networks.


Special requirements:
-Be appointed as AP(E) for non-pulsed power.
-Authorised to carry out electrical isolations and issue appropriate certificates.
-Authorised to switch HV and LV equipment in support UKAEA operations.
-Competency mentor for STSG group craftsmen and apprentices.
